Buffett's big railroad purchase for 44 billion dollars
Warren Buffett Imperium

His reputation as an investor is legendary. Now Warren Buffett is betting on a rapid economic recovery in the USA - and is making his biggest deal with the purchase of the Burlington
railroad group for $44 billion. Investors are electrified.

US billionaire Warren Buffett makes the biggest acquisition of his career in the midst of the economic crisis. The holding company Berkshire Hathaway is swallowing up the American railroad company Burlington Northern Santa Fe for 44 billion dollars. With this deal, he is betting everything on an economic recovery in the USA, Buffett said. "I love bets like that." He already owns a good fitfth of the railroad company and is now buying the company outright. The price also includes $10 billion in debt. Shares in Burlington jumped 29 percent to $97.78 after the plans were announced. The purchase also boosted the shares of its competitors. Union Pacific rose by 8.1 percent and CSX by 8.5 percent.

The US railroad business has recently suffered badly from the economic crisis. However, it is still considered a growth market. Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) is one of the largest providers in the USA. The company is one of the few in the industry to have a network across the continent.

Buffett sees great opportunities at Burlington

With his investment, Buffett is not only betting on a general economic recovery, but specifically on rising commodity prices. The higher the oil price rises, the more attractive rail freight transportation becomes. Buffett, who has excellent contacts in Washington, also expects the government to push ahead with the expansion of the railroads in the medium term. Of particular importance for Burlington is the transportation of coal, which is
used in many places in the USA. and makes a significant contribution to electricity generation. Buffett is already an important investor in the energy industry. His company Midamerican Energy is seen as a driver of consolidation. "Rail plays a key role in growth in the USA and it will flourish when the economy picks up again," Buffett enthused. "In the next ten, twenty and thirty years, the volume of freight transportation will increase. "Berkshire

leaks. Just over a year ago, in the middle of the financial crisis, he invested billions in the US investment bank Goldman Sachs and Siemens' archrival General Electric (GE) in a similar way - when hardly anyone wanted to give up any money. But the shrewd Buffett secured highly profitable conditions for himself. Buffett's holding company, based in Omaha (Nebraska), owns around 80 of his own subsidiaries in addition to share packages of large corporations. It is particularly active in the insurance business and the financial sector. The 79-year-old Buffett is a cult figure for countless investors in America and around the world. He has made many rich. The Berkshire share is the most expensive share on the New York Stock Exchange with a recent price of almost $100,000.
Buffett has therefore created a special share class for small investors. This B-share last cost $3265. It is now to be split again to enable smaller Burlington shareholders to exchange shares. In the second quarter, the investment company presented its best quarterly result for almost two years. Thanks to the recovering markets, net profit amounted to 3.3 billion dollars, an increase of 14 percent within a year. In the course of the upward trend on the stock markets, the company also benefited from an increase in the value of its capital investments and derivatives. However, the investment firm's turnover fell by two percent to 29.61 billion dollars.
